Sometimes, the people who shape our favorite anime worlds are names we only glimpse in the credits. We recognize the characters, remember their expressions, and return to their stories without necessarily knowing all the artists who helped bring them to the screen.

Kenichiro Katsura was one of those artists.

The animator, character designer, and animation director died September 30, 2026, at 59. His wife, animator Satoko Miyachi, announced his death October 5, explaining that he had been receiving treatment for an illness. His funeral was held privately with close relatives. The specific illness was not disclosed. (TV Asahi; Anime.com)

For fans of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, his name belongs to the team that helped make Rimuru’s world feel alive. For others, his work connects to Macross 7, Knight’s & Magic, or SYNDUALITY Noir. His career crossed different generations of anime fandom, contributing to the characters and worlds viewers made room for in their lives.

His Connection to That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Katsura served as a chief animation director on That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. That is an important contribution, but it is different from being the series’ original creator, its overall director, or a voice actor. (TV Asahi)

Animation is a collaborative craft. In general, chief animation directors help oversee the drawings and maintain visual consistency across work produced by multiple artists. The job helps characters remain recognizable as scenes, expressions, and movements change.

For viewers, that craft often becomes invisible in the best possible way. We stop thinking about individual drawings and start believing in the people on the screen.

That is part of what makes losing an artist behind a beloved series feel personal. Their name may be less familiar than the protagonist’s, but their contribution is woven into the experience we remember.

Will His Death Affect Future Slime Episodes?

As of October 8, 2026, we have not found an official announcement connecting Katsura’s death to a cancellation, a new production delay, or a change to the story of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

The current official Season 4 staff page credits Ryoma Ebata with character design and lists Masayori Komine, Hideki Yamazaki, and Tomoko Ito as chief animation directors. Katsura is not listed among those principal Season 4 staff credits. That does not establish whether he contributed to individual episodes, but it is important context when assessing claims about the franchise’s future.

The latest official plans include Season 4’s third cour, or broadcast block, beginning in July 2027, and the Clayman REVENGE television anime beginning in April 2027. Those announcements were published September 25, before Katsura’s death. They remain the last verified plans we found, rather than a new statement about how his passing may affect production.

Fans can mourn his loss without assuming the series is ending. Any confirmed production changes should come from the franchise or its production partners.

A Legacy Beyond Rimuru’s World

Katsura’s work extended well beyond Slime, with significant character design credits across several distinctive anime.

Macross 7

On Macross 7, Katsura handled character design for animation, building on original character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto. It is a useful distinction: the visual identity audiences see in an anime can reflect several artists working at different stages of production. (Ashi Productions)

For fans who remember Basara, Mylene, and the world of Fire Bomber, Katsura’s work forms part of that on-screen legacy.

Knight’s & Magic

The official Knight’s & Magic credits list Katsura as character designer and as one of its chief animation directors. His contribution helped shape the anime’s presentation of Ernesti and the characters surrounding him.

SYNDUALITY Noir

For SYNDUALITY Noir, Katsura served as animation character designer and chief animation director, adapting original character concepts by neco. Once again, his role helped carry character ideas into the moving, expressive form viewers encountered on screen. (Official staff credits)

The production committees behind Knight’s & Magic and SYNDUALITY Noir issued condolences following the announcement of his death, recognizing his contributions to their series. (Anime.com)

Remembering Him Through the Work

In the family’s statement, Katsura’s wife offered fans a gentle way to remember him: think of a character, illustration, or piece of animation they loved, and revisit his work when they have time. (Wasabi POP’s account of the family statement)

There is something fitting about that invitation. An animator’s work keeps moving when we press play again. An expression still lands. A character still makes us smile. A familiar world still welcomes us back.

We have written before about why we keep rewatching our favorite anime. Sometimes, another visit also becomes a small act of appreciation for the people who made that world possible.

Thank you, Kenichiro Katsura, for the work you shared with us.
